Layette Assembly

Friday, September 21st marked Fall layette assembly day. Fifteen (15) members assembled 20 girl and 17 boy boxes of treasures for some of Lake County's newborn babies. Layette committee co-chairs Peggy Walker and Tamra Hoover, along with Cindy Namesake, Clothing Cottage Manager, show how it's done and what the finished project looks like before going to different organizations like Birthright Lake County. Each of these boxes contains hand crocheted items such as an afgan, a cap, and a rattle. Coupled with a sleeper, onsies, a bath towel, washcloths, socks, bibs, receiving blanket, a story book and information about Christ Child, this package is a much needed start to any little one's new life. Donations of NEW baby items like those listed above are always accepted and can be dropped off at the Clothing Cottage in Mentor when stopping in to do some leisurely shopping.

On October 13 there was another

Tour of Churches

visiting 2 on the near west side and 2 on the east side. The theme was The Changing Face of the Catholic Church. On the west side we visited two Hispanic churches with the primary populations being Puerto Rican, Mexican and Peruvian. La Sagrada Familia was built in 1998 while St Michael the Archangel was built in 1898 by German immigrants. After lunch at Sterle's on East 55th Street, we visited two parishes serving primarily African American populations - St Adelbert/Blessed Sacrament and St Agnes/Lady of Fatima. St Adelberts was built in the early 1900s by Bohemian immigrants and St Agnes was built last year (2015). An interesting note is that when the African American population took over St Adelberts, they painted some of the faces of statues black which more accurately reflects the darker-skinned middle-eastern peoples. At St Agnes we were treated to a ringing of the bells and were able to look across the street at the famous League Park -- the original home of the Cleveland Indians. Using the link below you can view some pictures of the 4 parishes and if you have your own pictures you would like to share, send them to Dan, using the webmaster link at the bottom of the page.
